Orchards 3 - 5

Set within the Orchards precinct of Fairview Estate on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, this contemporary homestead is conceived as a refined farmstead compound embedded within orchards and open countryside. Articulated through simple, barn-inspired volumes arranged around sheltered courtyards, the architecture creates a sequence of connected indoor and outdoor spaces shaped by climate, views and topography. A restrained material palette and clear spatial organisation establish a calm, integrated relationship with the landscape, offering a contemporary interpretation of farm living.

Key metrics

  • Site: 1hectare land parcel (Orchards precinct)

  • Internal area: ±168 m²

  • Barn: ±90 m²

Core description

  • The home is organised as a modern farmstead compound, comprising a combined living and bedroom wing, a covered outdoor link and a separate barn structure. These elements are arranged around sheltered courtyards that define the spatial experience, extending living areas outward while maintaining protection from sun and wind. The layout emphasises clarity, efficiency and a strong indoor–outdoor relationship.

Site Response

  • The homestead is positioned to respond to long views across the landscape, solar orientation and prevailing coastal breezes.                                     The arrangement of buildings provides protection from weather while maintaining openness to natural light and outlook.                                           This approach allows the architecture to sit lightly within the landscape and remain closely connected to its setting.
