Courtyard House
Client workshop 4

Client workshop 3
19 May 2026
The design is evolving toward a quieter and more refined courtyard-based rural architecture rooted in the Fairview Estate context.
The current direction focuses on layered threshold spaces, protected outdoor living, filtered natural light
and a restrained material palette of limewashed masonry, concrete, timber, stone, and indigenous planting.
Rather than pursuing overt luxury, the project aims to create a calm and deeply atmospheric living environment where architecture, landscape
and climate work together through carefully framed courtyards, sheltered verandahs, and ecologically grounded outdoor spaces.

Conceptual Design
Client workshop 1
09 April 2026
Early concept material prepared for initial design discussion
Overview
This page shares the early architectural direction for the proposed second dwelling at Portion 191, Fairview Estate.
The plans and visuals shown here are conceptual working material intended to support discussion.
They should be read as an early spatial framework rather than a resolved design proposal.
Concept
The house is conceived as a fully independent second dwelling for Ansie Ferreira and her daughter, set within a 2-hectare landscape.
The concept is organised around:
-
two private bedroom wings
-
a shared living environment
-
courtyards and verandahs
-
a calm relationship to the existing homestead and surrounding landscape
The overall architectural language is quiet and restrained, with subtle reference to traditional farmhouse principles interpreted in a contemporary way.

Site & Living
The living wing is oriented north to capture the best natural light and open onto the main private outdoor space.
The bedroom suites are positioned further west, allowing the living spaces to remain open and light-filled
while giving both bedrooms privacy, views and morning light.
A shared courtyard between Ansie’s wing and her grandsons room creates a softer point of connection within the house,
while each bedroom suite also retains its own private outdoor space.

Initial Discussion
This first meeting is intended as a design workshop.
The concept will be refined through discussion around:
-
how open or separated the living spaces should be
-
the positioning of the Turkish bath
-
material and finish direction
-
timber vs concrete for outdoor decks and verandahs
-
solar requirements and whether solar is included in budget
-
water filtration requirements
Closing Note
This stage is about establishing the right foundation for the design.
The architecture will continue to develop through discussion, refinement and alignment.
