Concept
House Cotterell is conceived as a series of interconnected pavilions embedded within the rolling landscape of Fairview Estate. Organised around a central courtyard, the home creates a protected outdoor room that anchors daily life and strengthens the connection between architecture and landscape.
Simple forms, natural materials and carefully framed views shape an architecture that feels quiet, grounded and enduring, drawing on traditional farmhouse principles in a contemporary way.

Landscape-Led Design – The house is embedded within the natural slope, allowing the landscape to remain dominant.

Courtyard-Centred Planning – A central courtyard anchors the home and organises the primary living spaces.

Pavilion Arrangement – Simple gabled forms create clarity, hierarchy and separation between functions.

Indoor–Outdoor Living – Living spaces extend naturally into sheltered outdoor rooms and the surrounding landscape.

Privacy Through Planning – The arrangement of spaces creates protected courts while maintaining framed views.

Material Honesty – A restrained palette of natural materials brings warmth, permanence and a sense of place.

Courtyard development
SCHEME 01 - Grove court
A cluster of indigenous trees creates a sheltered courtyard defined by layered planting, filtered light, and a strong sense of enclosure.
SCHEME 02 - Excavated court
A broad canopy tree and peripheral planting form a protected landscape room that feels grounded and deeply connected to the site.
SCHEME 03 - Tree court
A single indigenous tree anchors an open clearing, creating a simple and calm gathering space defined by shade and restraint.
LIVING TERRACE
The terrace extends the living spaces into the courtyard, creating a shaded and connected outdoor room.
COMPACTED EARTH COURT
A simple, robust surface designed for gathering, movement and everyday living.
CANOPY TREE
A single indigenous tree anchors the courtyard, providing shade, scale and atmosphere.
LANDSCAPE EDGE
Planting is concentrated to the edges, creating enclosure, privacy and a strong sense of landscape.
MONOLTHIC PLINTH
A simple stone element emerges from the ground, offering a place for sitting, gathering and quiet moments.
